Set list at Dry Dock open mic

July 17, 2026

I can never quite tell whether I've rocked it or not -- as a rule of thumb, I reckon if I nail the opener and closer, anything in between can be a bit experimental. I think I did that in both sets -- I'm still unsure of Snapdragon Avenue as a song, but it's got a catchy chorus and the fingersnaps are a cracking gimmick. Hot Damn is pure silly pop, and got Abi Barstaff dancing, so that's a win. I need to remember to repeat the chorus.

Adele was ok, one of those short shelf-life songs that needs to be played but only once. Marjorie was, unusually, pretty strong on the vocals but a bit rubbish on the guitar, some horrible missed chords.

A very hurried second set -- honestly more of a tuple -- before kicking-out time. I enjoyed an unprovoked dig at England's World Cup efforts ("One-two, one-two. What, too soon?") and introducing Tangled Up In Bob with "Several people have done Dylan. I'm not doing Dylan, but I'm also not doing not doing Dylan." Good reaction to it -- it's a lovely, neat, self-contained joke of a song. Heidi took me a moment to find my pitch, but once I relaxed and breathed, it took off. (Tonight she was a conjurer's assistant again.)
