Much More Important Than That
Liner notes
Of all of the songs I've listed here, I think only this and House of Cards are explicitly break-up songs. I often say I started writing songs to figure out how I felt about things. This helped me go from utter distress to 'well, I was absolutely punching above my weight for a while there, it was obviously never going to last.' The title is (I think) a Bill Shankly quote about some people saying football's a matter of life and death when actually...I had the ball at my feet
With only the keeper to beat
And of course I casually slotted it wide
I'm not even that pissed
At how badly I missed
All the time your flag was up for offside.
Maybe I'm sore that you
Left before the final whistle blew
Even though it was clear we would never turn it around
I'm not sure I ever believed
We were in the same league
We were always on the brink of going down
Losing you hurt me more
Than the cup final score
To think we had a chance, I must have been mad
But I'll hang my souvenir scarf
Above your photograph
To remind me of all the hope I had
