Reynard

one man's fight
Liner notesThese are all protest songs, man. Sadly, I can't remember the tune to this one -- I do remember someone saying 'Crikey, he's a bit left-wing' when they heard me play it. The main appeal of it was always the slight pause after the first syllable of 'Countryside', which is extremely juvenile and I wag a stern finger at past-me (while trying not to giggle). I think my current songwriting uses more swearing, but it's generally milder. Also, my scansion and word-choices are much tighter.
My name is Reynard, I've been a fox since birth One in every while your men come by and block my earth Then your hounds come chasing me, I run as fast as I can run I wouldn't mind so much, but you seem to be having so much fun

You've ridden with the hunt for as long as you can remember
You're a Countryside Alliance member

I've just run a survey among my vulpine friends
Asking how they would prefer to meet their ends
Only three or four percent chose 'being ripped to shreds'
Almost three-quarters wanted painless bullets to their heads

You've ridden with the hunt for as long as you can remember
You're a Countryside Alliance member

Please, spare me the sermon
About how we foxes have to die because foxes are vermin
For most of the last year, your hounds have been unemployed
Yet we're hardly going under to bubonic plague and typhoid

You've ridden with the hunt for as long as you can remember
You're a Countryside Alliance member

You say we kill your chickens, you say we harm your trees
You say we're unhealthy, you say we spread disease
Let's just accept that all you say is true
Then by those same arguments we should be hunting you

You've ridden with the hunt for as long as you can remember
You're a Countryside Alliance member
