The Well Of Tears

early work

(with Stephen Bruce)

Liner notesI think Steve called it Wistful Song at first, but we settled on Well of Tears. I think it was an allegory for being let down by the Labour Party in the late 1990s. Plus ça change.

It seems you’ve sold your soul for a pocketful of gold
Everything you once believed, you’re ready to concede
You stay out of my way, but everything you say
Just serves to drive it through, you’re not the girl I knew

Everything is not as it appears
As the ripples spread across the well of tears
I toss a 10p piece and I wish the old you could be released,
And that you were here
As daybreak nears,
Another droplet disappears
Into the well of tears

Have you lost your mind? Or just left it behind?
Where once you were so strong, now your principles have gone
The dirty dregs of day slowly drift away
And I wonder how it feels to abandon your ideals

Everything is not as it appears
As the ripples spread across the well of tears
I toss a 10p piece and wish the old you could be released,
And that you were here
As nightfall nears,
Another droplet disappears
Into the well of tears
