Drive
This was written for the songwriting group with the prompt "transport". This was an especially annoying prompt because my previous workshop song was Connection, which is set on a train. This one, I wanted to do a series of micro-stories, each trying to give a bit of character and a bit of story based around driving. I spent some time worried that I'd stolen the chorus, particularly the interjected lines later on -- but I think they just remind me a bit of The Villain.
How I hit the brakes in time, heaven only knows
She screamed out of the cemetery straight into the road
Mascara on her wedding dress and panic in her eyes
Slammed the door behind her, there was nothing to decide
Just drive, just drive, just drive, just drive.
I grew up around here and the only thing I learnt
Was if nobody asks questions then nobody gets hurt
You take the bag to Clones and you drop it at McRae’s
Forget it ever happened and you go about your day
Just drive, just drive, just drive, just drive.
Neighbour at the back door knocking fit to wake the dead
It’s twenty-five to seven and I’m barely out of bed
But Annabel’s in labour and the baby’s on its way
Traffic lights and 30 signs are optional today
Just drive, just drive
Do whatever’s possible to get her to the hospital
Drive, just drive, just drive, just drive.
A message from the missus and she sounds a bit annoyed
A conversation’s coming up I’m anxious to avoid
She asked when I’ll be getting home, I texted I don’t know
I’m going to take the coast road and I’m going to take it slow
Just drive, just drive
Takes an hour easily to stop and see the scenery
Just drive, just drive, just drive, just drive.
